Travel to Hobart Hobart is the capital of Tasmania which is the smallest of Australia’s states. It is second-oldest city after Sidney. Hobart is small but beautiful city sites on Derwent River. City is famous for its large number of historic buildings which date back to a first settlements time. These heritage sites make visit Tasmania’s capital unforgettable experience. It is like travel to the colonial past. City is small and easy to find your way around. Hobart accommodation is not a problem all year around except high season in January. Travel to Tasmanian history From the beginning Tasmania was not place to travel to. The first settlement was built in 1803 as a punishing colony on the eastern coast of the Derwent River. Colony was moved to a better place at the present site of Hobart in 1804. Name of the capital originate from Lord Hobart who was the Colonial Secretary. The population of the town was growing rapidly by free settlers and the convict population. City’s harbour was one of Australia's best deepwater ports and was the centre of the Southern Ocean whaling and seal trade. Hobart rapidly grew into a major port, with associated businesses such as shipbuilding. Hobart Town turned into a city in 1842, and was renamed Hobart in 1875.
